"Wouldn't Leave" is a song by American hip-hop artist Kanye West from his eighth studio album, Ye (2018). The track includes vocals from PartyNextDoor, Ty Dolla Sign and Jeremih. It was covered by August Alsina in October 2018. For the most part, the track received critical acclaim. It references West's controversies linked to slavery and Sway Calloway.

Background

On June 4, 2018, three days after Ye's release, West's wife Kim Kardashian revealed that the song was the only one from the album that he didn't play for her properly until the last minute and also that she's a fan of it at the 2018 CFDA Fashion Awards.[1] American rapper August Alsina shared his cover version on October 2, 2018.[2]

Composition

A sample of "Baptizing Scene" by Reverend W.A. Donaldson is used within "Wouldn't Leave", which is not the first time West has sampled this song, since he sampled it in the collaborative single "Niggas In Paris" with Jay-Z back in 2011.[3] West looks at Kardashian's loyalty in not leaving him after his controversial comments about slavery made earlier in the year.[4]

Critical reception

The song was generally positively received by music critics. In comparison to West's two non-album singles "Ye vs. the People" and "Lift Yourself" from 2018, the track was described along with "Yikes" from the same album as it by Rob Sheffield of Rolling Stone as West having "even drearier complaints on deck."[5] Kitty Empire of The Observer described it in connection to "Yikes" as being "another track with a superficially twinkly mien."[6]

Jonah Bromwich of Pitchfork wrote in response to "Wouldn't Leave": "The music is an army of prayer hands, floating on a wave—please and thank you and praise you all at once—all for Kim. Because even after he offers her that exit, he raps, 'she wouldn't leave.'"[7]

Commercial performance

In the same week that Ye was released, the song made its debut on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 24.[8] It debuted at a similar position of number 25 on the Canadian Hot 100 in the same week.[9] "Wouldn't Leave" also charted at number 33 on the ARIA Singles Chart upon the album's release.[10]
