The Western Storm Football Club, nicknamed The Storm, is an Australian rules football club which competes in the Tasmanian State Football League (TSL) and is based in Prospect, a Western suburb of Launceston.

Club details

The Western Storm Football Club represent the western side of Launceston and areas surrounded by the Great Western Tiers and entered the Tasmanian state league competition in 2014.[3] The club replaced the South Launceston Football Club at the end of the 2013 season, with the latter exiting the competition due to not pursuing a further license in the Tasmanian State League beyond the season, despite eventually winning the 2013 premiership. Regardless, the history making 2014 Western Storm list was made up of significant numbers of past premiership players joining the new franchise from South Launceston.[3] Originally, former Hawthorn AFL player Mitch Thorp was selected as coach of the side, though he resigned prior to the 2014 season to become assistant-coach at SANFL club Glenelg.[2]

Home stadium

Western Storm plays all its home games at the Aurora Stadium in Launceston.[4]

Training ground

The club is headquartered and trains at Prospect Vale Park in the Meander Valley Council region.[5]

Club home guernsey

The club guernsey home strip in 2014 was a predominantly dark grey with a significant lighter blue lightning strike sprawled across the front of the guernsey. The away strip was identical with respect to the same lightning strike though it is coloured in a predominantly white background.[6]

In the 2015 a new guernsey has been designed and will be launched prior to the commencement of the season. The new design will feature a more prominent impression of the Club's 'Thor' logo. As well the design combines the Club's colours of grey, blue and white.

Despite only forming as a new club in late 2013, the Western Storm were granted an invitation to compete in the 2014 Foxtel Cup knockout competition ahead of 2013 runners-up Burnie due to its connections to 2013 premiers South Launceston.[7] The Western Storm are the only Tasmanian club to win a preliminary game in the competition's history, and were knocked out in the Semi Final stage.
