Similar to 2012 format, a total of 260 athletes qualified through a combination of team and individual spots. Host nation Brazil had already guaranteed three automatic places for men and two for women, while ten spots (six for men and four for women) were entitled to the athletes through the Tripartite Commission Invitation, leaving the remaining berths up for grabs in both the men's and women's competitions respectively.[4][5]

Five Olympic records were broken.[6]
Men's events
- Men's 69kg On 18 August 2016, Kyrgyz weightlifter Izzat Artykov was stripped of his bronze medal in the men's 69 kg event after testing positive for strychnine. Luis Javier Mosquera of Colombia, who had been the fourth-place finisher before Artykov's disqualification, was moved into third place.[7][8]
- Men's 85kg On 8 December 2016, the Court of Arbitration for Sport stated that original bronze medalist Gabriel Sincraian of Romania was found to have committed an anti-doping rule violation after testing positive for exogenous Testosterone, a non-specified substance prohibited under S1.1b on the WADA prohibited list, during an in-competition doping control on 12 August 2016. All results obtained by Sincraian in the Rio 2016 Olympic Games were disqualified.[9]
