Total Drama Presents: The Ridonculous Race (also known as Total Drama: Ridonculous Race, or simply The Ridonculous Race) is a Canadian animated reality television series which lampoons the conventions commonly found in reality television. The show is a spin-off of the original Total Drama series created in 2007 as well as the second series created as part of the overall franchise. The series is created by Fresh TV Inc. and distributed by Cake Entertainment and airs on Cartoon Network in North America. The series premiered first in the United States on September 7, 2015,[2] and began airing in Canada on January 4, 2016.[3][4] It also aired on ABC3 in Australia, starting December 12, 2015. Like the original series, this series consists of 26 episodes per season.[5]

Plot

The series parodies popular travel and competition style reality shows.[6] It will take place around the world and feature pairs of contestants, rather than teams, in the style of the reality series it is parodying.

The first season of The Ridonculous Race consists of mostly all new characters, with four characters returning from the original Total Drama series. All characters will be split into 18 teams of two, and must complete challenges around the world to win and split a one million Canadian dollar prize.[2]

Racers will visit a different country in every episode and perform in "legs" while the team to finish in last place may or may not be eliminated.[7] In each of the 26 different locations, each pair must go to a "Don Box" to receive clues that let them decide which challenge they want to perform in.

Challenges are of four different types: an "either-or" (similar to Detours from The Amazing Race), a "botch-or-watch" (similar to Roadblocks), an "all-in" or a "superteam'. An "either-or" gives the teams a choice from two challenges, the "botch-or-watch" is a challenge that must be done by one person on the team, specifically the person who did not take on a prior challenge's component, an "all-in" is a challenge that both team members must take part in, and a "super team" is a challenge in which multiple teams complete together in a challenge.

However, at some point in the game if any person doesn't follow the specific directions of the challenge, they will be faced with a timed penalty once reaching a "chill zone", the finish line for each leg, before stepping foot on the "carpet of completion".

Cast and characters

The new host, Don, was voiced by Terry McGurrin.[8] Characters in bold are reused characters from the original series while the rest are new recurring. All the voice actors and their characters are listed below:

The third-generation contestants from the fifth season of the original series were also seen for a brief segment in the episode "Little Bull on the Prairie" while Anne Maria, Blaineley and Chris McLean made non-speaking cameos in "A Million Ways to Lose a Million Dollars".

Production

Production commenced on January 1, 2014 and concluded on October 30, 2015.[29] It was announced that Alex Ganetakos was producing the show,[30] Terry McGurrin was writing the screenplay,[31] and that Chad Hicks was directing.[32] The new host Don was revealed in a Fresh TV post in October 2014.[33] It was confirmed that 26 episodes would be picked up for the show and that it would air sometime the same year.[34] However, one of the producers, Alex Ganetakos, stated that many Ridonculous Race seasons are possible if the first season is successful.[35] In June 2015, the first episode was leaked, revealing all of the characters.

Casting

Even though some of the characters from the main series will make appearances, the spin-off series will primarily have a new cast.[36] The spin-off series will be a "Buddy Comedy" and will include 36 characters (18 teams of two), four which are from the original series (Owen, Noah, Geoff, and Leonard) and the rest brand new characters.[2] Kristin Fairlie, the voice actor for the character Bridgette from the original series, was cast to voice one of the new contestants, Carrie.[37] Scott McCord (voice of characters Owen and Trent in the original series) as well as Carter Hayden (voice of Noah in the original) were also revealed to be returning to the cast, and were seen in the recording studio together.[20] It was later confirmed that the actors were indeed going to voice the characters Owen and Noah.[21] It was eventually revealed that the first pair is to be the aforementioned character Carrie and her best friend Devin, who is played by Jeff Geddis.[19] In February, the second pair was revealed: Stephanie and Ryan. The two are voiced by Nicki Burke of Dead Rising 2 and Joseph Motiki, from Rescue Heroes.[14] In a new promotion by Cake Entertainment, Geoff was also revealed to be among the returning cast, teamed up with Brody, one of his friends from home.[26] The father-son team of Dwayne and Dwayne Jr. was also revealed.[15]

In June, a pair of goths called Ennui and Crimson,[16] and Mary and Ellody, two close friends who are dubbed the "Geniuses", were revealed.[10] A week later, the fourth pair to be released are Emma and Kitty, who are Asian sisters with opposite personalities, referred to as the "Sisters".[9] A week later, another team was confirmed; Chet and Lorenzo, known as "the Stepbrothers".[17] Next to be revealed are twins Mickey and Jay, called "the Adversity Twins", who are plagued with countless phobias, allergies, injuries, disorders, and ailments.[28] The rest of the teams were all revealed shortly thereafter.

Setting

Many countries and their geographic elements are drawn and animated when used as settings for the whole series. A different country is used for each episode.[7] The starting point shown in the first episode was the city of Toronto, Ontario, Canada,[38] while characters will then travel to many locations. The countries that are going to be used in the series for the characters to visit are: Argentina,[39] Australia,[40] the Bahamas,[41] Brazil,[42] China,[43] Finland,[44] France,[45][46] Iceland,[47] India,[48] Indonesia,[49] Mexico,[50] Morocco,[51] New Zealand,[52] Romania,[53] Russia,[54] Vietnam,[55] Zimbabwe,[56] the United Arab Emirates,[57] and the United States.[58][59][60] They are also going to enter the Arctic Circle at some point[61] as well as going back to Canada.[62]

The series comprises 26 episodes:

26 "A Million Ways to Lose a Million Dollars"[99] Terry McGurrin February 15, 2016[100] October 9, 2015 726 1.14[101]

The Final 3 teams are now in New York and are ready for the season finale. Their first challenge is to go to the Empire State Building and climb up all the way to the top in order to grab a case and then take the case to Central Park. The Surfer Dudes take the subway and get a huge lead so they reach Central Park first with the case. Meanwhile, the other two teams are stuck in heavy traffic so they both reach Central Park much later, but almost at the same time. Therefore, the Police Cadets reach the Chill Zone first by a few seconds while the ice dancers are finally eliminated from the race. The final leg is to take the case to the lake and then try to figure out the combination that is being written on one of several buoys, and then open the case that will reveal a map that leads to the finish line. The surfers already have their lead, but are looking in the wrong place so the Cadets begin searching first in the lake. The cadets are the first to open their briefcase, but MacArthur accidentally puts a hole in their boat, forcing her to row as fast as she can to shore, tiring her out. Geoff gives a motivational speech to Brody as they find their combination and make it to the finish line first. It's a neck to neck battle between the surfers and the cadets, but in the end the surfer dudes win, but only by a close second, and the police cadets are not even surprised that they had lost the race. All the other teams who were previously eliminated are mostly seen cheering at the finish line, and Don declares the surfers as the winners of this new series, so they are given the one million dollar prize.

  • Alternate ending: The Cadets stand on the final carpet first and do not collapse, while the Surfer Dudes arrive a moment later, and are declared as the winners. Everything afterward is edited to depict the cadets holding the million dollar prize, while the surfers are standing out with the rest of the peanut gallery.

Media

A video game has also been released that allows players to use any of the series' 36 main characters and race them in short endless running type games.[7] The game, titled "Donculous Dash", was released on January 4, 2016, but it is only available in Canada. The game can be downloaded on the Canadian app store[102] and a demo version is also available on their Cartoon Network website.[103]
