TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs was the third annual TLC: Tables, Ladders and Chairs professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It took place on December 18, 2011 at the 1st Mariner Arena in Baltimore, Maryland.[4][5]

Eleven matches were contested at the event, ten of which were broadcast live on pay-per-view television. In the main event, CM Punk defeated The Miz and Alberto Del Rio in a Triple Threat Tables, Ladders, and Chairs match to retain the WWE Championship. It was the first pay-per-view since Cyber Sunday 2008 not to feature John Cena at all for a match or a promo, and the first since SummerSlam 2003 to not feature him while being active on the participating roster.[citation needed] This was also Booker T's first pay-per view since SummerSlam 2007

The event received 179,000 pay-per-view purchases, which was down from the previous year's 195,000 buys.[6]

Background

TLC featured professional wrestling matches that involved different wrestlers from pre-existing scripted feuds, plots and storylines that played out on WWE's television programs. Wrestlers portrayed villains or heroes as they followed a series of events that built tension and culminated in one or more matches. Traditionally, matches during this event involved the use of tables, ladders, and chairs.

The main rivalry from the Raw brand involved The Miz, Alberto Del Rio and CM Punk over Punk's WWE Championship. At Survivor Series 2011 CM Punk won the WWE Championship off Del Rio and defended it against him on RAW later. The next week Miz, Del Rio, John Cena and Dolph Ziggler were arguing over should be #1 contender. John Laurinaitis announces that each would face a SmackDown superstar and if they won, they would receive a match for the WWE Championship. Del Rio defeated Daniel Bryan, Miz defeated Randy Orton via countout, Ziggler was defeated by Sheamus, and Cena defeated Zack Ryder (Ryder was not a SmackDown superstar) but gave up his opportunity to give Ryder a U.S title shot. Later that night at the contract signing Laurinaitis announced it would be a TLC match.

The main rivalry from SmackDown involved Mark Henry and Big Show over the World Heavyweight Championship. At Money in the Bank Mark Henry crushed Big Show's fibula keeping him out of action for nearly 3 months. After that Henry won a 20-man battle royal to become the #1 contender for the World Heavyweight Championship and won the title from Randy Orton at Night of Champions and defended it a Hell in a Cell. Big Show returned to SmackDown after Hell in a Cell and was givin a title opportunity at Vengeance, but they fought to a no contest after the ring imploded. They had a rematch at Survivor Series, but ended in DQ when Mark Henry performed a low blow on Big Show. On WWE.com it was announced the two would face each other in a Chairs match.

Event

Preliminary matches

The first match was the WWE United States Championship match between champion Dolph Ziggler and Zack Ryder. After a back-and-forth contest, Ryder appeared to have Ziggler pinned, but Vickie interfered and put Dolph’s foot on the ropes. This action got Vickie banned from ringside. After some more back-and-forth action, Ryder hit his finishing move (the "Rough Ryder") and scored the pinfall and thus the championship, his first WWE singles title.

The next match was for the WWE Tag Team Championship between champions Air Boom (Kofi Kingston and Evan Bourne) vs. Primo & Epico. The match began with an Air Boom flurry, and the challengers taking control in the middle portion of the match. The champions rallied, as Bourne took out Epico while Kingston hit the Trouble in Paradise on Primo. Kofi got the pinfall and with his partner remained Tag Team Champions.

The third match of the evening was a tables match between Randy Orton and Wade Barrett. The match saw both competitors exchanging attempts to put the other through a table. The finish came when Barrett set Orton on top of a table, as he went to the second rope. Barrett attempted an elbow drop, but Orton successfully hit an RKO on Barrett through the table, for the win.

The next match was for the WWE Divas Championship featuring champion Beth Phoenix versus Kelly Kelly. The match started off with both divas going to the outside and fighting on the floor. After some back-and-forth action, Phoenix tried to hit the Glam Slam. Kelly countered that into a roll up, but Beth also countered. Beth then hit her version of the Electric Chair and pinned her opponent, remaining Divas Champion.

The first featured match was a Sledgehammer Ladder match between Triple H and Kevin Nash. A sledgehammer was hanging above the ring for either wrestler to use. The winner was to be decided by pinfall or submission. The match was fairly even until Triple H unhooked the sledgehammer. He hit a pedigree and grabbed the sledgehammer again. Nash pleaded for mercy by making the Kliq hand sign, but Triple H responded with a "DX" style crotch chop and a sledgehammer shot to the face, beating his former friend.

The sixth match was Sheamus vs. Jack Swagger. Sheamus was dominant early, and Swagger rallied to control the middle portion of the match. After some brawling around the ringside area, Sheamus launched a battering ram from the top rope. Sheamus then tried a Brogue Kick, but Swagger took out his leg. Swagger achieved an ankle lock, but Sheamus sent him to the corner. Swagger charged Sheamus, but was greeted with the Brogue Kick. Sheamus covered Swagger for the win.

Next was a chairs match for the World Heavyweight Championship. World Champion Mark Henry fought The Big Show. Big Show began by throwing chairs into the ring. Henry tried to leave with his title, refusing to fight. Big Show then knocked him to the ground. Each fighter then landed blows with chairs. Henry held onto his while Big Show fell. Recovering, Big Show landed some body blows. Big Show tried a Chokeslam, but Henry countered it and flattened him. Henry attempted a World's Strongest Slam, but Big Show escaped. Henry avoided a Chokeslam, and grabbed a chair. Big Show countered with a KO Punch, covering for the win. After the match, Henry - who was angry at his loss - hit the new champion with a DDT through several chairs.

Seconds later, Daniel Bryan cashed in his Money in the Bank briefcase to have a match for the World title and quickly defeated Show to become the new World Heavyweight Champion.

The next match was for the Intercontinental Championship between Intercontinental Champion Cody Rhodes and Booker T. The match was scheduled for earlier, but Rhodes twice attacked Booker before the start. After a quick start by Booker, Rhodes then took control. Booker rallied by hitting some clotheslines and a side slam, followed by his spin-a-rooni. Booker missed a Scissors Kick and went for a Superkick but missed allowing Rhodes to plant Booker with two Disaster Kicks to pick up the win.

Main event match

The main event was the Triple Threat Tables, Ladders, & Chairs match for the WWE Championship between The Miz, Alberto Del Rio, and current WWE Champion CM Punk. At the outset the others double teamed Punk. Punk ducked a double clothesline and knocked both opponents down. Miz & Del Rio recovered and landed a superplex. Miz and Del Rio went to the floor to grab a ladder. Del Rio broke the alliance and smacked Miz with a chair. Del Rio grabbed a ladder but Punk dove onto Del Rio. Punk and Miz returned to the ring where Miz stomped on Punk and landed a chair shot to Punk’s gut. Punk put his knee in Miz's face, but missed a running bulldog, allowing Miz to drop Punk head first into the chair. Del Rio came back into the ring where Miz tried a Skull Crushing Finale while Del Rio was on the ladder. Del Rio reversed it and slammed Miz on the ladder. Punk slammed Del Rio with the ladder and threw Del Rio into the barrier. Del Rio escaped Punk's superplex but not the following neck breaker. Miz landed a second chair shot to Punk’s gut. Punk grabbed it and started beating on Miz. Punk put Miz on top of the barrier and Punk hit the knee, sending both men over the barrier. Del Rio handcuffed Punk to the ladder. Punk broke the ladder but was still handcuffed. Punk used them to backdrop Del Rio onto the ladder. Miz climbed the ladder, but Punk knocked him down and attempted a GTS, but Miz escaped. Punk and Miz went to the top rope, where Punk tried to superplex Miz. Del Rio kicked Punk through a table onto the floor. Del Rio used the chair against Miz and achieved a Cross Armbreaker on Miz whose arm was tangled in the chair. Del Rio headed back to Punk and attacked him with a chair shot. Del Rio laid a cross armbreaker on Punk and then climbed the ladder. Miz & Punk knocked him off and the ropes end up between his legs. Punk and Miz fought inside the ring where they took each other out with clotheslines. Ricardo Rodriguez came into the ring and climbed the ladder. Miz and Punk tipped the ladder over, sending Ricardo into a table on the floor. Both men blocked the other's finisher. Miz went to the corner, where Punk tried to hit the knee only to go into the ring post. Miz hooked Punk's handcuff to the turnbuckle. After missing some punches, Punk knocked Miz out of the ring with a big kick. Del Rio and Miz pulled a ladder into the ring. Punk broke the turnbuckle to free himself. All three men climbed the ladder. Punk knocked out Del Rio down to the mat. He and Miz finished the fight in the ring where Punk blasted Miz with a GTS. The Champion Punk climbed the ladder and retrieved the WWE Championship.
