Sagid Magomedovich Murtazaliev (Russian: Сагид Магомедович Муртазалиев; Avar: СагIид МагIамедович МуртазгIалиев; born 11 March, 1974 in Makhachkala, Dagestan) is Russian of Avar descent wrestler, two time World champion, Olympic champion in Freestyle wrestling.
Olympics
Murtazaliev represented Ukraine at the 1996 Summer Olympics and competed at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney for Russia where he received a gold medal in Freestyle wrestling, the heavyweight class.[1]
Politics
In 2001, a bomb was found near Murtazaliev's home in Kizlyar.[2] A charitable foundation is named after Sagid Murtazaliev.[3] On April 12, 2010, Murtazaliev, who had been the head of Kizlyarsky District, became the head of the Dagestan branch of the Russian pension fund.[4][5] Murtazaliev is a United Russia party deputy to the Legislative Assembly of the Republic of Dagestan.[6][7]
Olympic protest
Murtazaliev returned his Olympic gold in protest of the IOC's decision to eliminate wrestling.[8]
