Reportedly haunted locations in California

The following are reportedly haunted locations in California, in the United States. This list is sorted for convenience by county. Some of these sources are listed in Dennis William Hauck's book, Haunted Places: The National Directory: Ghostly Abodes, Sacred Sites, UFO Landings and Other Supernatural Locations[1]

Alameda County

  • The USS Hornet (CV-12) in Alameda is reported to be the most haunted ship in the entire US Navy. It was featured on Ghost Adventures.[2]
  • Mission San José in Fremont is reported to be haunted after many tragic deaths that occurred after fires and earthquakes that damaged the mission property.[3]
  • The Claremont Hotel, Club and Spa is said to house many souls. In particular, the fourth floor of the hotel is said to be the most creepy section where many ghosts reside.[4]

Amador County

  • The Preston School of Industry in Ione was once a home to troubled youths. The castle had its share of deaths and suffering. Allegedly, the ghost of a caretaker who was bludgeoned to death by students still resides there. It was investigated on the TV series Ghost Adventures where Zak Bagans was possessed by the caretaker.[5]
  • The National Hotel in Jackson is reported to house some specters that have died on the hotel premises.[6]

Butte County

  • The Cherokee Cemetery is said to be haunted by a girl and her murderer who was burnt to death. In strange hours, trespassers have reported to hear scary sounds and mysterious apparitions within the boundaries.[7]

Calaveras County

  • The Hotel Léger in Mokelumne Hill is reported to be haunted by the spirit of George Léger, the former owner of the hotel. His presence is most felt in the room he died in, room 7.[8]

Contra Costa County

  • The Black Diamond Mines area near Antioch is reported to have numerous accounts of paranormal activity. The first haunt is that of the White Witch, who was executed for being a witch after all the children she was caring for died of illness. The second haunt is that of Sarah Norton, who haunts the Rose Hill Cemetery after she was crushed to death by her carriage.[9]

Del Norte County

El Dorado County

  • The Cary House in Placerville is reported to have a haunt that dates back to the 30's involving a lot of unexplained noises and phenomena.[11]

Fresno County

  • Wolfe Manor in Clovis is a mansion that was once part of a sanitarium. The mansion, which is allegedly haunted by ex-residents of the sanitarium, will soon be transformed into a haunted hotel called the Wolfe Manor Hotel. The owner, Todd Wolfe, has reported hearing ghosts walking and talking and even breathing on him. LiveSciFi.tv sent a group to spend the night inside the mansion, during which some unexplained phenomenon reportedly happened, including a door that slammed shut by itself. A local news station did an overnight investigation for Halloween of 2007 and recorded an EVP. Several other EVPs and orbs have been caught on audio and video by investigators.[12][13] It was featured on the TV series Ghost Adventures. As of November 2014, however, with pressure from the City of Clovis, the manor has been torn down due to unsafe conditions that Todd Wolfe could not repair due to funding issues.
  • The Del Rey Cemetery in Del Rey is reported to house a glowing headstone and shadow figures all around its limits.[14]

Inyo County

Kern County

  • The Kern County Kids Shelter in Bakersfield is reported to be haunted by the spirits of children that were neglected during the shelter's period of operation. The shelter was featured on the Web Series, Haunted Discoveries.[16]

Kings County

  • The Hanford Civic Auditorium in Hanford is reported to have ghostly sightings all around the building, including a common sight of spirits watching an "invisible" show.[17]

Los Angeles County

  • The American Idol Mansion in Beverly Hills is reported to be haunted after the season 10 finalists were spooked out by spirits.[18]
  • Barney's Beanery in West Hollywood is reportedly haunted by one or more ghosts who have been seen by multiple employees including a manager.[19]
  • The Comedy Store on the Sunset Strip in West Hollywood is reportedly haunted by prankster ghosts that will reset a room prepared for the evening or stack a mountain of chairs within seconds if no one is in the room. It is also claimed a dark entity exists in the basement that comedians Blake Clark and Joey Gaynor claim to have witnessed manifest.[20]
  • The Enchanted Forest in Altadena is reported to be haunted due to its notorious history. From murderous scenes to burning down of buildings, this hike trail has it all. Also known as the "Cobb Estate". Stories have been told of seeing strange figures, paranormal noises, and unseen visitors.[21]
  • Fort MacArthur in San Pedro is reported to be haunted by the spirits of soldiers that died in accidents at the fort.[22]
  • The Pico House in Los Angeles is haunted by victims of the Chinese massacre, and is also haunted by the specter of Pio Pico. It was featured on Ghost Adventures with the Hollywood Ghost Hunters.[23]
  • Hollywood and the surrounding area have numerous sites that are believed to be inhabited by the spirits of deceased celebrities. For example, the ghost of actress Peg Entwistle, who committed suicide by jumping off the Hollywood Sign in the Hollywood Hills, has reportedly been seen near the sign. Some apparitions have been reported as being sighted at more than one location in the area.[24]
  • The Lincoln Heights Jail in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles is reported to be haunted by the seven inmates who were beaten to death by guards on what is known today as Bloody Christmas.[25]
  • The Linda Vista Community Hospital in Los Angeles is allegedly haunted by the spirits of many patients who died traumatic deaths. It was investigated on the TV series Ghost Adventures.[26] Many ghastly noises were heard and some mysterious apparitions were seen. However this place is now closed and is being turned into a retirement home.[27]
  • The RMS Queen Mary, docked in Long Beach, is reported to be haunted and currently serves as a literal haunted attraction for Halloween. Residents have reported to encounter otherworldly shadows and mysterious noise at this creepy Ship in California.[28][29][30][31]
  • The Banning Inn and the Two Harbors on Santa Catalina Island are reportedly haunted by the White Lady, there are also rumors of Natalie Wood haunting the area nearby after her mysterious death in the area.[32]
  • Vogue Theater[33] was haunted. The projection room is said to be haunted by a ghost named "Fritz" who was a former projectionist at the Vogue Theater. One nights filming required a projection change over and although the current theater projectionist had fallen asleep, someone made the change as scheduled. In the late 1800s, Hollywood Boulevard was known as Prospect Avenue. The Prospect Elementary School stood at the site where the Vogue Theatre, which opened in 1936, now stands. In 1901, tragedy struck the four-room schoolhouse, and it burned to the ground killing 25 children and the teacher, Miss Elizabeth.[34][35]
  • The John Sowden House is reported to be haunted by a lady in white. There is also seen a male's spirit wandering inside the house. Although there remains many active spirits, the girl's malevolent soul has created serious trouble for many visitors.[36]

Madera County

  • The Chowchilla Library in Chowchilla used to be a local bowling alley. It is reported to be haunted by the spirit of a chef who used to serve food on site for the bowlers.[37]

Marin County

  • The Easkoot House in Stinson Beach has reports of paranormal activity coming directly from the owners of the private residence. Former owners say that every night at 2:00 AM, the ghost of the former owner comes stomping out of his house to search the beach for his lost golden hook. The latest owners, Judy and Leonard Chapman, have reported several unexplained happenings, including the sounding of a burglar alarm at 2:00 AM. The alarm was completely disconnected but continued to sound for over ten minutes. Two years later a family of five bought the home and their youngest child died of mysterious causes.[38]

Mariposa County

  • The Hotel Jeffery in Coulterville is reported to have 17 spirits that have perished in the area due to the California Gold Rush.[39]

Modoc County

  • The Fiddler's Green area near the Clear Lake Wildlife Refuge is reported to be haunted by the spirit of a woman who was killed by thieves while her husband was away. Her ghost is said to be seen playing a fiddle near a well where her dead body was thrown down.[40]

Mono County

  • Bodie is a preserved ghost town that is reported to have ghostly sightings all around its limits.[41]

Monterey County

  • The Point Sur Lighthouse on the Big Sur coastline is reportedly haunted by victims of numerous shipwrecks off of the coast of the light. The lighthouse was featured on Ghost Adventures.[42]
  • The Tor House and Hawk Tower in Carmel was reported to be haunted by Robinson Jeffers after he predicted in his poem Ghost that he would speak to the living 50 years after his death in 1962. The house was featured on Ghost Adventures.[43]
  • The Los Coaches Adobe building is said to have few fierce souls that reside inside the construction. There are some sign of ghost haunting and other otherworldly signs had shown up during paranormal researches.[44]

Napa County

  • The Napa Cinedome in Napa is reported to be haunted by two ghosts that give the impression of being a couple. Their presence is described as being watched by somebody that is not there.[45]

Nevada County

  • The Del Oro Theatre in Grass Valley is said to have "a few resident ghosts."[46]
  • The Holbrooke Hotel in Grass Valley has housed many famous residents including Mark Twain and three US Presidents. Home to the famous suicide gambler, a man who slit his throat and was found dead in a pool of blood (his suicide letter can be found at the Doris Foley Library in Nevada City), this hotel has plenty of history. Aside from chairs moving across the floor, lights turning on and off, and voices lingering in the air, guests report hearing the sounds of little ghost children jumping on old mattress springs, as well as sighting the notable cowboy ghost who appears only from waist up and a Victorian-dressed maid who walks the halls of the Holbrooke.[47]
  • The National Exchange Hotel in Nevada City is reportedly haunted by spirits that have died during the night. The hotel was featured on Ghost Adventures.[48]
  • The Stonehouse Brewery in Nevada City is reportedly haunted by deceased Chinese immigrants that were killed in the tunnels underneath the property. The brewery tunnels were featured in Ghost Adventures.[48]

Orange County

  • El Adobe de Capistrano Restaurant in San Juan Capistrano, which comprises the home of Miguel Yorba built in 1797 and the town's Juzgado (court and jail) built in 1812,[49] is reputed to house a ghost in former jail cell, now the restaurant's wine cellar.[50] In addition there have been reports of a headless friar in front of the restaurant.[50] The small city has the highest reporting of ghosts in the county and one of the highest in California.
  • Mission San Juan Capistrano is reputed to house the specters of an Indian girl, a headless Spanish soldier, and a bell ringer.[51]
  • Disneyland in Anaheim is reported to have numerous haunts associated with people that have died on park premises, including the spirit of Walt Disney haunting his old apartment by the fire station on Main Street.[52]
  • The Stanley Ranch Museum is said to be haunted by malicious spirit of a woman and a child. The in detail haunting is listed on haunted California investigations.[53]

Riverside County

  • The Mission Inn in Riverside is said to be haunted by many spirits who died in a fire that happened during its early years.[54]
  • The 452 AMDS Building is reported to be haunted by ghosts that tend to produce many otherworldly phenomenon inside the structure.[55]
  • The Lake Elsinore Country Club is known to be haunted by many a ghosts, supernatural creatures and evil souls. During strange night hours, spooky noises could be heard inside the construction.[56]

Sacramento County

  • Old Sacramento is reportedly haunted by victims of influenza, fire, and flooding. It was featured on Ghost Adventures.[57][58]

San Bernardino County

  • The ghost town of Calico is reported to be haunted by the spirit of Esmeralda, who haunts the old playhouse after she died in there.[59]
  • The Morey Mansion in Redlands is reported to be haunted by the spirits of David and Sarah Morey, both of whom died in the mansion.[60]
  • The Agua Mansa Pioneer Cemetery is supposedly haunted by numerous ghosts. Due to fierce ghouls, demonic possessions and appearance of hazy apparitions, this place is named on one of the top most haunted locations in California.[61]

San Diego County

  • The Hotel del Coronado, in Coronado near San Diego, is a National Historic Landmark. One room of the hotel is supposedly haunted by a young woman named Kate Morgan, who stayed there in 1892 and was found dead on the beach steps, reportedly a suicide.[62]
  • The Whaley House in San Diego was built by the Thomas Whaley family in 1857.[63] The home once hosted the town courthouse, general store, granary, theater, and morgue. It evolved into a commercial hub of early San Diego, before "New Town" was developed several miles to the south. This National Historic Landmark, now a museum, is allegedly haunted by members of the Whaley family as well as a man who was hanged on the spot before the house was built. It has been called "the most haunted house in America" by Life Magazine.[64]
  • The Casa de Estudillo, a National Historic Landmark in Old Town San Diego, is reported to be haunted by the namesake family, the Estudillos. It was featured on Ghost Adventures.[65]
  • Area 41 of Camp Pendleton is reported to be haunted by the spirit of a Marine who shot himself after his fiancée left him. He makes his presence known by moving things around and occasionally humming the "Think" tune from Jeopardy!.[66]

San Francisco County

  • Alcatraz is a former maximum security prison on an island in San Francisco Bay. It is no longer used as a prison. Visitors and tour guides have made claims of hearing screams, slamming cell doors, banjo music, and footsteps. "Ghost Hunters", "Ghost Lab", and "Ghost Adventures" have all done investigations here.[67] There are many other ghost phenomenon caught at the haunted Alcatraz. Indeed a very spooky Museum and is known as one of the creepy locations in California.[68]
  • Stow Lake in the Golden Gate Park area is reportedly haunted by the spirit of the Lady of Stow Lake. She has been described to be able to morph into a human shape, an orange light, and a palm tree-like shape.[69]

San Joaquin County

  • The Banta Inn in Tracy is reported to have haunting stories since the 1930s, including the sighting of the former owner of the inn, Tony Gallegos, who died of a heart attack in the building. There are also reports of poltergeist activity that happens in the bar.[70]
  • The East 8 Mile Road is rumored to be haunted by some evil ghost. The most horrible spirit is of a woman whose apparition is frequently seen standing in middle of the road during midnight hours. Many visitors have complained to hear mysterious disembodied voice at the cross way.[71]

San Luis Obispo County

  • Mission San Miguel in San Miguel is reported to be haunted by the Reed family and other people that stayed at the mission after they were murdered by British pirates due to Mr. Reed's bragging of his family's hidden gold stash buried under than the mission.[72]

San Mateo County

  • The Moss Beach Distillery in Moss Beach is a restaurant looking over the sea. It is reported to be haunted by the spirit of the Blue Lady, who died in the area awaiting her husband to come back from sea. The restaurant has been featured on Ghost Hunters, where they reported that the accounts may be true, but were displeased to find props that helped reenact the experiences for guests.[73]

Santa Barbara County

Santa Clara County

  • In Sunnyvale, many Toys "R" Us employees have reported seeing unusual rearranging of toys in the aisles, and reported sightings of a man in his thirties dressed in old clothing. His name is believed to be Johan, and is believed to be a farmer who used to live on the site of the Toys "R" Us and is just keeping "an eye on the old place". The store still remains open today; most customers are completely unaware of this legend.[75][76][77]
  • The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose is supposedly haunted by the ghost of its eccentric builder, Sarah Winchester. Ironically, she is said to have built the rambling mansion to protect her from the spirits of all those killed with her late husband's famous line of rifles. It was featured on Ghost Adventures.[78]

Santa Cruz County

  • The Brookdale Lodge in Brookdale is reportedly haunted by the spirit of Sarah Logan, the niece of the former owner, who drowned in what is now known as the Brook Room. The lodge was featured on Ghost Adventures.[79]

Solano Countyo

  • The Union Hotel in Benicia is reported to be haunted by the spirit of a woman that hanged herself in her room. She can be heard in her room crying.[80]

Tulare County

  • Cinema 1-2-3 in Visalia has had accounts of more than 300 spirits inhabiting the theater.[81][82]

Ventura County

  • The Olivas Adobe in Ventura is reported to be haunted by the ghost of the Black Lady, who is often seen in the living room and the balcony.[83]
  • The Elizabeth Bard Memorial Hospital in Ventura is said to be haunted by the ghost of Dr. Cephas Little Bard, who built the hospital (no longer used as a hospital) and was the first person to die in the hospital.[84]
  • The Nordhoff Cemetery in Ojai is haunted by several ghosts.[85]
  • Glen Tavern Inn in Santa Paula is reportedly haunted by the spirit of a little girl, and that of a prostitute that was beheaded in a room. The inn was featured on Ghost Adventures.[86]
