Religion of pieces is a political neologism used since the mid-2000s[1] by some critics of Islam to counter those who come to its defense by calling it the "Religion of Peace". The origin of the term is uncertain, though it was used to parodize George W. Bush's original claim that Islam is a religion of peace after the 9/11 terrorist attacks.[2] The term alludes to the destruction caused by such attacks, and Islam's alleged inability, according to its critics, to support complex civilizations.[3]
This debate comes up among the commentariat and in online discussions after acts of Islamic terrorism.[4] It has been used as an online meme by those who wish to limit Muslim immigration into the West, but is also considered politically incorrect and is often described as Islamophobic by supporters of multiculturalism and Islamization.
