Mikuni Station (三国駅 Mikuni-eki?) is an Echizen Railway Mikuni Awara Line railway station located in Sakai, Fukui Prefecture, Japan.

Station

All Mikuni Awara Line trains serve Mikuni Station. The station is staffed, with a three-story station building located beside the single platform.

Surrounding area

  • The station opens onto a rotary with a small Keifuku bus terminal and taxi stand
  • Behind the station are steep hills; pedestrians can cross to the front entrance via a bridge, but automobile traffic must make a detour.

History

The station originally belonged to the Mikuni Line of Japanese Government Railways. When the Mikuni Line suspended operation in 1944, Keifuku Electric Railway (now Echizen Railway) inherited the station.

  • December 15, 1911: Mikuni Station opens as a station on the Mikuni Line.
  • January 31, 1929: Mikuni Awara Electric Railway Mikunichō Station opens adjacent to Mikuni Station.
  • February 10, 1929: Mikunichō Station renamed Densha-Mikuni Station.
  • May 28, 1932: Mikuni Awara Electric Railway extends service to Higashi-Tōjinbō Station.
  • September 1, 1942: Keifuku Electric Railway merges with Mikuni Awara Electric Railway.
  • January 11, 1944: Densha-Mikuni — Higashi-Tōjinbō section operation ends.
  • October 11, 1944: Mikuni Line operation suspended; Densha-Mikuni Station moves to JGR Mikuni Station and Keifuku succeeds operation of former JGR line between Mikuni and Mikuni-Minato.
  • March 1, 1972: Mikuni Line officially closed.
  • June 25, 2001: Operations halted due to accident on the Echizen Main Line.
  • August 10, 2003: Station reopens as an Echizen Railway station.
