Matthew Santoro (born July 16, 1985) is a Canadian YouTube personality and former accountant. He is most well known for his top ten lists and "50 Amazing Facts" videos which he posts to his main channel, "Matthew Santoro".[3][4][5] Examples of his top ten lists include "10 FORBIDDEN Places You’re Not Allowed to Visit!" and "10 Extremely BIZARRE Phobias People Actually Have!".[6][7] He also has a second channel which is primarily used for vlogging. As of April 17, 2016, his main channel has over 5.38 million subscribers and 664.8 million video views, while his second channel has about 863.4 thousand subscribers and 37.4 million views. On January 4, 2016, Santoro began uploading videos to his third channel Santoro Gaming. This channel has over 239.2 thousand subscribers and about 2.8 million views.[8][9] He currently resides in Toronto.

Personal life

Santoro was born and raised in Welland, Ontario and later moved to St. Catharines.[1] In May 2015, he moved to Toronto, Canada. A fan of Drake and hip-hop culture, Santoro often refers to Toronto as "the six". In January 2016, he uploaded a video titled My Abuse Story. In the video he talked about an unnamed romantic partner, who he claimed had physiologically and physically abused him during their relationship. The video was intended to be private, he had made it public accidentally.[10] It was claimed by his friend, Rob Dyke, that the "unnamed partner" mentioned in the video was Nicole Arbour.[11]

Career

After Santoro graduated from Brock University with a Master of Accountancy in 2010, he became an accountant. He also started making videos on YouTube that year, mostly skits. In 2012 he got laid off from his accounting job. He described that experience in a vlog titled "I Lost My Job Today". He then started focusing on his YouTube career and thus began posting videos weekly.[12] Also during this time, he recalls in an interview, that he noticed that his educational videos, such as his top ten lists and "50 Amazing Facts" series, were viewed more than his other videos. That made him begin uploading those types of videos more frequently.[13] He believes that his more frequent of uploading of these videos helped increased his viewership from only a few thousand per video in the past, to the millions he currently has.[3][14] He is able to make a career out of YouTube through the money he earns from ad revenue, which is more than what he made as an accountant.[14][15]

Notable collaborations

Santoro has been a special guest narrator on CinemaSins' Everything Wrong With... series. He was featured in the Underworld: Evolution video which was published on October 10, 2014. He also collaborated with Matthias, creating a song, "The Booty Song", and Barely Political (Now Barely Productions) in their video, "YouTube Complaints 2015". Santoro and Vsauce3 collaborated with The Muppets, in a video titled, "What if Quicksilver Ran Past You?", which was the first video in the Muppet collaboration initiative on YouTube.[16]

He collaborated with Lilly Singh, Olga Kay, Toby Turner, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, among others, in Terminator Genisys: The YouTube Chronicles, a promotional series for the Terminator Genisys movie.[17]

Accusations of Plagiarism

On 1st May 2016, fellow YouTuber GradeAunderA uploaded a video titled "THE YOUTUBERS COMPLAINING ABOUT DRAMA RANT (Exposing Matthew Santoro)", in the video, Grade accused Santoro of plagiarizing his content from the site listverse.com. As a result, Santoro responded to the criticism and went through 200 videos to edit their descriptions with links to each videos sources. Santoro has since been citing his sources in further videos.
