Mallur (மல்லூர்) is a town panchayat in the Salem district in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu.

Etymology

Mallur is believed to be named after the Mullia flower which is heavily cultivated in the area. The city is home to a Perumal Temple roughly 500 years old. The temple contains a reclining representation of Vishnu similar to the Srirangam Temple in Trichy. Mallur is also home to Kamatchi Amman and Mariamman Temples. The Eswaran Temple is located on the Sunai Karadu which is famous for its natural flow of water. The Thursday Market is popular for buying and selling fresh locally grown produce. Mallur is surrounded by numerous brick factories, which are a source of direct & indirect employment. The town is also famous for a local dish of spiced puffed rice. Mallur is beautiful.

Demographics

Mallur is a town in Panchayat that is in the district of Salem a part of Tamil Nadu in India. Mallur is divided into 15 wards for which elections are held every 5 years. Mallur has a population of 10,331 [1] of which 5,112 are males and 5,219 are females, according to the 2011 Indian census. Children up to 6 years of age make up 9.26% of the total population. In Mallur females number 1021 against the state average of 996. Children number around 1019 compared to the Tamil Nadu state average of 943. The literacy rate of Mallur is 75.65 %, lower than the state average of 80.09%.[3] In Mallur, male literacy is around 84.26% while the female literacy rate is 67.21%.[4] Mallur has over 2,754 houses to which it supplies basic amenities like water and sewerage. It is also authorized to build roads within the town.[5] Panchayat limits and imposes taxes on properties falling under its jurisdiction .Mallur has a substantial population of scheduled castes. Scheduled castes constitute 26.01% while scheduled tribes make up 0.04% of the total population. Out of the Mallur total population, 4,749 are workers. Of this number 3,143 are males while 1,606 are females. In this census survey, a worker is defined as person who is in business, has a job, is in service, cultivates the land or is in some other labour activity. Of this total working population, 92.42% are engaged in full-time work, while 7.58% are part-time workers.
