L'Incorrect is a French monthly magazine founded by Jacques de Guillebon, Laurent Meeschaert, Benoit Dumoulin and Arthur de Watrigant.

History

L'Incorrect was funded by Charles Beigbeder[1] and Laurent Meeschaert, members of the Avant-Garde, a think tank of former minister Charles Millon "who had made an alliance with the National Front to win the regional elections" and is launched in September 2017. It included many people close to Marion Maréchal such as Jacques de Guillebon, editorial director and columnist at La Nef, a traditionalist Catholic monthly, Arnaud Stéphan, her former parliamentary attaché, and people close to her political ideas such as Damien Rieu of Génération Identitaire or Bruno Larebière, "a former editor of Minute".[2]

After the editorial staff was formed — Laurent Meeschaert was the director of publication, Jacques de Guillebon was the editor-in-chief and Arthur de Watrigant was the deputy editor — the first 90-page issue, titled "Those who are NOTHING," hit the newsstands on September 7, 2017 with a circulation of 10,000. By 2022, the circulation was 15,000 and the magazine has seven full-time employees. Since 2017, Laurent Meeschaert has had to make up the financial deficit every year.[3]

On June 20, 2022, the newspaper La Lettre A announced that Jacques de Guillebon was changing his position, to devote himself to the development of the title, notably digital and intellectual. The editorial management of L'Incorrect was entrusted to Arthur de Watrigant in September 2022.[4] This decision is attributed to Meeschaert, main shareholder of the magazine, then candidate of Reconquête! in the Oise's 4th constituency on June 10, 2022. It was alleged that the publication of an article deemed too critical of Eric Zemmour was the cause.[3]

L'Incorrect co-organized "The Right-wing Convention" on September 28, 2019, in Paris, bringing together some thirty personalities "from the conservative and identity-based right" according to CNews, among them Marion Maréchal, Zemmour, Robert Ménard and Jean-Frédéric Poisson. The objective was to build "the alternative to progressivism, multiculturalism and free trade".[5] Raphaël Enthoven, who went to represent "the other side", was criticized for his participation.[6]

Editorial line

La Croix defined L'Incorrect as a "magazine between the right and the far right" which "extends the conservative and identitarian line of Marion Maréchal Le Pen".[7] For Marianne, the monthly magazine created by "the nostalgics of Marion Maréchal-Le Pen", "is situated at the crossroads of the right and the extreme right".[8]

According to France Culture, the monthly "which claims to be fighting against 'bien-pensance'"[9] wants to bring the right and the far right closer together politically and addresses "the conservative, anti-liberal and Eurosceptic right".[2] For Libération, "L'Incorrect wants to be at the crossroads of the right, or a version of what the "union of the right" could look like from a cultural point of view, including the right and the far right together, or at least one of its forms, cleansed of FN and LR executives or leading politicians".[10]

According to Le Figaro, L'Incorrect, whose slogan is "Faites-le taire!" (Shut it down!) was launched by Beigbeder, "promoter of the 'right outside the walls,' at the confluence of LR and the FN. According to Stéphan, the editorial staff "will be very young, with a different tone and very rock'n'roll, composed of people deeply on the right".[11]
