Koungheul is the name of one of 35 departments of Senegal, as well as Koungheul Arrondissement, and Koungheul, the principal town of the department.

In 2006, the new Koungheul Department was created as a division of Kaolack Region, and carved out of the eastern half of the Kaffrine Department.[1]

The 11 Regions of Senegal are subdivided into 35 departments and 103 arrondissements (neither of which have administrative function) and by collectivités locales (the 11 régions, 110 communes, and 320 communautés rurales) which elect administrative officers.[2]
