In November 2010, it was revealed by SM Entertainment that Jonghyun, along with TRAX’s Jay, Super Junior’s Kyuhyun, and rookie singer, Jino, had formed a project group, SM The Ballad, under their label. The group focuses more on ballad rather than Pop and R&B themes.[3] The group released their debut album, Miss You, on November 29, 2010. They debuted on November 28, 2010 on SBS's Inkigayo with their lead single, "Miss You." They also promoted another single from the album, "Hot Times."

In February 4, 2014, SM Entertainment revealed that SM The Ballad will make a comeback with new members, Jonghyun being the only one from the original formation.[4] It was later revealed that he would be singing, together with Girls' Generation's Taeyeon, the title track of the new album, Breath.[5]

Solo Work

In October 2010, Jonghyun was one of twenty idols from various South Korean groups that recorded the song, "Let's Go," for the purpose of increasing public participation in the 2010 G-20 Seoul summit. He provided vocals along with label-mates Sungmin, Seohyun and Luna.[6]

Composing and Lyric Writing

Jonghyun debuted as a songwriter when writing the Korean lyrics to SHINee's fourth promotional single, "Juliette", which was the featured on their second mini album, "Romeo", released in May 2009. Jonghyun went on to participate in the writing of two songs on SHINee's second Korean studio album, "Lucifer". The first, "Up & Down", was co-written with Misfit with the rap being written by Minho. The second, "욕 (Obsession)", was completely written by Jonghyun minus Minho once again working on his own rap. In 2012, Jonghyun co-wrote the lyrics to the song with "알람시계" (Alarm Clock)" with Minho, a song about wishing to wake up from the nightmare of a past break up,[7] and wrote the lyrics to "늘 그자리에 (Honesty)" which was described as a song written for the fans who had stayed by their side with unchanging love until that point. Both songs were featured on the mini album, "Sherlock". For SHINee's misconceptions series (which was made up of two full albums and a repackage), Jonghyun wrote the lyrics to: "Spoiler", "오르골 (Orgel)", "Dangerous (Medusa II)" (which was co-written with Jo Yun Kyeong), "버리고 가 (Better Off)" and "너와 나의 거리 (Selene 6.23)", the last which was written after Jonghyun drew inspiration from witnessing a super moon in June 2013. In October 2013, Jonghyun wrote the lyrics to "상사병 (Symptoms)" which was featured on SHINee's fifth mini album, "Everybody". In May 2015, he wrote the title track of SHINee's fourth Korean album, "Odd", "View", making it the second title track he had written for the group since their debut. He also wrote and composed the track "Odd Eye" on the same album, and the co-wrote the lyrics to the track, "Chocolate", on the repackage album released in August 2015.

In October 2013, Jonghyun debuted as a composer of the track "우울시계 (A Gloomy Clock)" which was featured on IU's third Korean album, "Modern Times". The song, which Jonghyun gifted to IU as a friend, was also co-written by Jonghyun and dubbed a duet. "Red Candle", which was also composed and written by Jonghyun, was released by Son Dam Bi two months later in December 2013. In March 2015, another track that Jonghyun both composed and wrote, "Playboy", was featured on EXO's second Korean album, "EXODUS". A month later, in April 2015, Lim Kim released "No More" on her third mini album, "Simple Mind", which Jonghyun also composed and wrote. He participated in the vocal direction for all of the aforementioned as well. Jonghyun also wrote the lyrics to "Pretty Boy", which was featured on Taemin's solo album, "Ace", in August 2014.

As a DJ for MBC FM4U's midnight radio show "Blue Night" Jonghyun has revealed his newly written songs on his radio show which he has prepared for a special corner called "Blue Night Lyrics, That Man's Composition". Back in June, DJ Jonghyun tweeted:<templatestyles src="Template:Blockquote/styles.css" />

As I started Blue Night, I contemplated on how to incorporate myself well into the program… As expected, the conclusion is communicating with listeners and music! That’s why I have prepared a project where I personally write a song pertaining to a listener’s story and let you hear it. The name of the corner is ‘Blue Night Lyrics, That Man Composition’. It won’t be aired every week, but it will be aired once every few months as a special corner, so please send in a lot of stories. I’m accepting stories through the homepage.

The segment, which was first revealed in July 2014, has taken place four times in total since its start as of September 2015 with a total of nine songs being released that were all either: completely written and composed by Jonghyun, or written by Jonghyun with the composition help of his composition group, WeFreaky.[8]

Television shows

On 6 November 2009, label mate Yesung of Super Junior made a surprise appearance on KBS' Music Bank with Shinee in place of Jonghyun, who was recovering from influenza, in a performance of "Ring Ding Dong".[9]

Jonghyun was also a cast member in KBS's Immortal Songs 2 for two episodes with fellow label-mate Yesung.

On January 14, 2014, it was announced that he would be a cast member of KBS2's pilot variety show Music Show. Jonghyun joined "Music Show" as the maknae member of the MC line up. The MC line up boasted of known and established musicians' in the Korean Music industry "Yoon Jong Shin, Lee Juk, and Yoo Hee Yeol" as well as Yoo Se Yoon, a comedian originally known for his love for music. It has been reported that SHINee's Jonghyun was chosen because although he may be an idol, he has been recognized as a singer-songwriter with his own works.[10] The show never aired beyond "said" pilot episode.

Last January 10, 2015 it was revealed that for Mnet's entertainment program "4 Things Show" second season, Jonghyun would appear as the first guest in 2015. On January 9, two teaser videos introducing Jonghyun as the show's first guest was released onto Mnet's official YouTube account.[11]

Solo debut

Jonghyun debuted as a solo singer with the EP Base, released January 12, 2015. The lead single, "Deja-Boo", features hip hop artist Zion.T.[12] The title song, featuring Iron as the rapper, is called "Crazy (Guilty Pleasure)" and was released on January 12, 2015 along with the album.[13] Jonghyun wrote the lyrics for all the songs on the album, and also collaborated with other artists such as Wheesung and Younha. The album peaked at number 1 on both Billboard's World Albums chart and the Gaon Album Chart.[14][15]

In August 2015, it was revealed that Jonghyun would be the first entry in a new solo concert series of SM Entertainment's, "The Agit".[16] The concert, titled "The Story By Jonghyun", was confirmed to be centered not only around songs of Jonghyun's that he has both composed and written on his own from his radio show but from his debut solo album. Eight shows were originally set to take place between October 2 and 11, tickets going on sale on September 1, and selling out in under two minutes. Due to high demand four more shows spread throughout three more days were added on to the list. Later, on November 18th, it was confirmed that Jonghyun would be having five encore concerts for the solo concert series which were held from December 11th - 13th. [17]

Jonghyun sustained ligament injuries to his left ankle after he was mobbed by excited fans following Shinee's performance at the Korea-Indonesia Sharing Friendship Concert on October 12, 2010 in Jakarta, Indonesia.[18] As a result, Jonghyun was unable to dance alongside his fellow group members for several months.[19][20] Subsequently, Jonghyun also had to receive surgery to repair the damage.[21]

On October 26, 2010, Jonghyun was confirmed to be in a relationship with actress Shin Se-kyung.[22][23][24] They broke up after 9 months of dating.[25][26]
