The Hanoi Metro (Vietnamese: Dự án Đường sắt đô thị Hà Nội) is a metro rail system being constructed in the capital of Vietnam. Hanoi's first metro line was originally scheduled to be completed in 2016 but pushed back to 2018 and expected to provide transportation to 200,000 passengers a day.[1]

Overview

Currently, commuters in Hanoi use motorbikes, bicycles, cars, buses, and taxis to get around. The metro project is part of the Vietnam Ministry of Transport's master plan, which aims to reduce the use of private motor transport and enhance the urban environment. The entire project is being carried out by Hanoi Metropolitan Rail Transport Project Board (HRB), formerly known as the Hanoi Authority for Tram and Public Transport Development Management (HATD).

Plan

In July 2008, Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng approved an overall transport development plan for Hanoi, which, among other projects, proposed a metro system with five routes.[2][3] The project is being carried out by the Hanoi Metropolitan Rail Transport Project Board (HRB, network map).[4]

The priority lines are:[5]

  • Line 1 : Giap Bat to Gia Lam, part of the Ngoc Hoi to Yen Vien. Ownership Vietnam Railway Corporation, length 15.36 km. North-South. Converts an existing metre gauge track into a double-track, elevated and electrified railway. Financial assistance from Japan.
  • Line 2: Nam Thang Long–Tran Hung Dao. Ownership Hanoi Urban Railway Project Group, length 11.54 km, 10 stations. Financial assistance from Japan (JICA loan agreement VNXVI01 signed 2009-03-31). All underground.
  • Line 2A: Cat Linh–Ha Dong. Ownership Vietnam Railway Department, length 13.00 km, 12 stations. All on a viaduct, in the city centre. With financial assistance from China, construction started in January 2012 by The China Railway Group.
  • Line 3: Nhon–Hanoi Railway Station. Ownership Hanoi Urban Railway Project Group, length 12.50 km (8.5 km overhead, 4 km underground), 12 stations. With financial assistance from France, construction started in September 2011, engineered by the French SYSTRA company.

The long term plan is to have the following five lines:

Line 5 South of West Lake (Nam Hồ Tây) - Ngoc Khanh - Lang - Hoa Lac 34.5 km

Construction

Construction on Line 3 began in September 2011. This was followed by Line 2A which has been under construction since January 2012.[6] Trial runs on Line 2A are expected to begin in 2014, with operations on the line scheduled to begin in 2016[4] but pushed back to 2018[citation needed].
