The Science and Technology Branch (STB) is a service within the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The STB is responsible for providing forensic science, applied technology, identification, information sharing, and automated analysis support capabilities to the FBI and the larger law enforcement community.

Leadership

Headed by an FBI Executive Assistant Director, the STB is responsible to the FBI Director through the Deputy Director. As a unit of the FBI (which is a division of the United States Department of Justice), the STB is ultimately responsible to the Attorney General of the United States.

The current STB Executive Assistant Director is Amy Hess, who was appointed by FBI Director Robert Mueller in January of 2014.[2] The incumbent was Steven Martinez who was appointed on May 9, 2012.[3] Louis E. Grever served as the STB Executive Assistant Director from October of 2008.[4] The first STB Executive Assistant Director was Kerry E. Haynes who was appointed in 2006..[5]

Organization

The STB was formed by the unification of the FBI's various scientific, applied technology, identification, and investigative support units.
