Bahrain Olympic Committee History

Lua error in package.lua at line 80: module 'strict' not found. The Bahrain Olympic Committee was founded in 1979 and re-registered according to the law No. (21) of the year 1989, issued on 26/06/1990 under No. (3) on the organization of clubs and associations in the field of youth and sports at the General Organization for Youth and Sports and has legal personality from the date of its registration publication in the Official Gazette.

The Bahrain Olympic Committee is an independent civil body with legal personality and is a member by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). It has all the rights and obligations set forth in the Olympic Charter.

The idea to establish the committee was finally fulfilled on May 19, 1979 as it became the official organization supervising sport activities in Bahrain and under the Supreme Council for Youth and Sports, which was founded in 1975, presided by the then Crown Prince His Majesty King Hamad.

And following the constituent meeting on May 19, 1979, in the presence of representatives of nine sports associations – athletics, swimming, football, basketball, volleyball, handball, weightlifting, table tennis and shooting, the main system of the committee was formed and submitted to the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, which was then the supervising organization of the national clubs and the sports associations.

On May 23, 1979, just four days after the constituent meeting, the then Minister of Labour and Social Affairs issued a decision announcing the foundation of Bahrain Olympic Committee and declaring the first board of directors, presided by Shaikh Isa bin Rashid Al Khalifa.

After being accepted as a National Olympic Committee member of the International Olympic Committee in July 1979, the Bahrain Olympic Committee started establishing a series of relations with Arab and continental nations .

Late on, the Bahrain Olympic Committee joined the Arab Sports Games Federation and became a founding member of the Olympic Council of Asia, which was founded in November, 1982, as well as playing a major part in establishing the National Olympic Committee Union in August 1982.

Only three years in existence, the Bahrain Olympic Committee has gained world praise. The Ninth Asian Games in New Delhi, in December 1982, marked Bahrain's maiden appearance on the continental level.

The 1984 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXIII Olympiad, saw Bahrain compete for the first time on this level.

Since then, Bahrain has been keen to participate in the Olympics and Asian Games, as well as on the Arab revel, with its maiden contributions being at the Sixth Arab Games in Rabat, in Morocco on September 1985.

The distinctive efforts of the then president of the General Organization for Youth and Sports, and vice-president of the Bahrain Olympic Committee Shaikh Fawaz bin Mohammed Al Khalifa, had a prominent role in a significant shift for Bahrain sport, in general, and to the march of the Bahrain Olympic Committee, in specific.

This boom saw Bahrain reach high competitive standard, starting from the 2002 Asian Games in Busan, in South Korea, through to Doha Asian Games in 2006, the 2010 edition Games in Guangzhou, in China, where Bahrain accomplished unprecedented achievements.

Bahrain also had impressive results on the Olympic Games levels, especially in the 2004 and 2008 Olympics in Athens and Beijing, where they took their first-ever Olympic gold medal in the men's 1,500m through Rashid Ramzi, which was subsequently withdrawn after the Bahrain athlete failed to pass doping tests.

On the Arab level, the third decade of the Bahrain Olympic Committee has seen the emergence of promising faces of Bahrain talent that were pushed in the Algeria and Egypt Arab Games in 2004 and Egypt in 2007, respectively.

Sport Federations Under The BOC

Bahrain Football Association

It's believed that football in Bahrain has started in 1919 at Al Hidaya Al Khalifiya School in Muharraq, which was the second capital of Bahrain. Two teams were officially founded in 1928 – Al Khalifi in Muharraq and Al Watani in Manama. These two teams have met on several occasions, while both played against other teams representing the expatriate communities in Bahrain.

As time passed by, more local teams emerged, resulting in the formation of the Bahrain national team. Their first international match was played in 1931 against Iraq in Basra. A committee, tasked at supervising domestic competitions, was later founded in 1945. At that time, local championships featured a combination of national and expatriate teams, representing local clubs, companies and establishments.

Bahrain Athletics Association

Since it has been founded, the Bahrain Athletic Association technically depended in the beginning on outstanding Egyptian coaches. Coaches from US and the Arab region were also hired. They all did well and the outcome of their work was reflected in Asia's 400 meter- hurdle champion, Ahmed Jassem, with a record of 31.49 as well as in the 110 - meter racing of the Arab tournament with a record of 17.14.

The fastest runner in the Arab region in 1989 and holder of the 41.10- second record of the 100- meter race, Khalid Jom'a was another evidence of such outstanding endeavors of those coaches, not to speak of numerous Bahraini calibers who proved to be distinct referees and arbitrators.

Bahrain Handball Federation

Handball action in Bahrain started in 1972 when the first board of directors was founded, paving the way for its nationals to accomplish various remarkable achievements.

The game of handball in Bahrain featured many diverse stops since its foundation, as the participation of teams from Muharraq and several villages had contributed to the formation of the association pillars.

And despite limited financial sources and sports facilities, competitions taking place at that time had resulted in the emergence of many handball talents, as well as a group of distinctive administrators and coaches who built a solid base of handball in the kingdom.

The brilliant record of Bahrain handball on the international level did not take long, as national clubs managed to leave its marks on the GCC arena and imposed absolute authority on the game as Ahli Club took the gold medal for an eight time, while compatriots Al Najma Club had their share of this regional competition, having won the title on five occasions.

Bahrain was also not far from the international arena, as the junior and youth teams broke into the Global Gateway by reaching the World Championship finals in the 1990s, before coming back to the 2007 Youth World Championship held on home soil, where the Bahrain's could finish eighth overall, which was the best result achieved by any regional team.

But Bahrain’s most impressive achievement was yet to come, as in 2009, the men’s senior team made their nation proud by booking their first-ever berth in the World Cup finals in 2011 in Sweden, having finished second overall in the 14th Asian Championship finals in Beirut. '

Bahrain Volleyball Association

Volleyball in Bahrain started in the 1919 in the beginning of formal education in the Kingdom of Bahrain. In the physical education session, volleyball began to draw the attention of the following generations since that date.

The availability and simplicity of all sports gears required for this type of sport was a crucial factor to see it spread all over the schools in Bahrain. Volleyball within government schools featured noticeable development, and from hosting matches in the open field, the game started to take place indoors due to unstable weather conditions. The Bahrain Volleyball Association was formed on December 19, 1974 and its first board of directors saw the light following the first general assembly meeting. The late Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Fares Al Khalifa was named president, while other members were Mohammed Hamada, Ahmed Al Murbati, Mohammed Yousef, Abdulla Habib, Abdullatif Kamal, Ebrahim Al Doy and Abdulrahman Abdulla. The association had contributed to many honorable achievements for Bahrain and the Arab region in the administrative and technical fields by reaching leading posts in continental and international federations, besides organizing GCC, Arab, Asian and international tournaments, while achieving outstanding results on the international level.

Bahrain Table Tennis Association

The history of the Bahrain Table Tennis Association in the Kingdom of Bahrain (BTTA) goes back to the 1940’s when the game was officially practiced in a number of national and expatriate clubs, while private competitions were organized among schools.

Several clubs, the first of which were Al Fardoosi, Al Lulu and Sanabis, started to organize competitions involving national clubs. And In 1972, a special committee was elected to set up the bylaws of the game and officially announced the association, which was chaired by Shaikh Abdulrahman bin Rashid Al Khalifa.

The association board of directors also comprised Hamad Al Jassim, Abdulla Hassan and Ebrahim Busmait, who set up the main rules and regulations of the association. An interim board was then formed, consisting of Salman Ahmed, Jaffer Al Musalli and Yousef Zuayyed.
