Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital (AJEH) is a Mumbai eye hospitals and it was rated as 'the best eye hospital in Mumbai' by Outlook, an Indian weekly news magazine in its July 2002 issue.[1]

History

  • It was established by chairman and managing director Prof. Dr. S. Natarajan in 1990 in Dadar[2] and shifted to its current location in Wadala.
  • President of India has approved S. Natarajan's name for conferment of Padmashri in recognition for distinguished service in the field of medicine.
  • It also houses the Aditya Jyot Eye Bank and Aditya Jyot Optometry Institute.
  • Consultants affiliated with Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital include S. Natarajan, cornea specialist Kavita Rao, Pandurang Kulkarni, Kruti Mody, Mihir Kothari, Ruvit Nikam and Anupam Deshpande. M. M. Sharma is a senior anesthesiologist at the institute; Radhika Srinivasan, also an anesthesiologist, is the CEO of Aditya Jyot Foundation of Twinkling Little Eyes.
  • Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital has been visited by the former President of India A.P.J.Abdul Kalam, former Governor of Maharashtra S. M. Krishna and the chief minister of Maharashtra, Vilasrao Deshmukh.[3]

Education

  • Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital trains medical graduates in ophthalmology. It is a recognized institute for DNB Diplomate of National Board (DNB).[4]
  • Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital also offers fellowships to Indian and foreign ophthalmic post graduates in Vitreoretinal surgery and anterior segment surgery.

  • Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital launched the latest fourth-generation optical coherence tomography (OCT) which will combine evaluation of retina, cornea and glaucoma in one.[9]
  • Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital is the first hospital in Asia to introduce the retinal endoscope and the Preferential hyperacuity perimeter.[10]
  • S. Natarajan, chairman and Managing Director, was appointed the honorary ophthalmic surgeon to the Governor of Maharashtra.[11]
  • Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital is one of the institutes in India which transplants stem cells grown in a culture medium in the lab into patients suffering from chemical burns and ocular diseases which need such stem cells.[12]
  • In February 2006, NCRM (Nichi-in Centre for Regenerative Medicine) signed a memorandum of understanding with Aditya Jyot Eye Hospital for a collaborative research on retinal stem cells in the presence of the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, R. R. Patil and Hyosuke Yasui, the consul general of Japan.[13]
