The 2010 League of Ireland was the 90th season of the League of Ireland. For the 26th season in succession, it was played using a two division format,[2] consisting of the League of Ireland Premier Division and the League of Ireland First Division.[A] Bohemians were the defending League of Ireland champions and League of Ireland Cup holders. UCD competed in the Premier Division having won promotion as First Division champions in 2009.

On 29 October 2010, Shamrock Rovers won the title after a 2-2 draw away to Bray Wanderers.[3][4] They narrowly beat rivals Bohemians to the title by virtue of a better goal difference.[5][6]

Preseason

The participating clubs were confirmed by the scheduled conclusion of the League's licensing process on 15 February 2010, with the exception of Cork City. A decision on the club's participation was deferred due to an ongoing court case.[7] A provisional fixture list was released on 17 February, two weeks before the start of the season.[8][9] The list controversially included Premier Division fixtures for Cork City.[10] They were denied a license on 22 February,[11][12] and the holding company, Cork City Investments FC Ltd, put into liquidation the next day by the High Court.[13] Their supporters' trust FORAS re-entered the club under the temporary name Cork City FORAS Co-op into the First Division and subsequently re-acquired the name of Cork City.[14] After Derry City's expulsion from the League of Ireland and subsequent liquidation in 2009, a reformed club under new ownership was accepted into the First Division alongside Cork.[15] Airtricity was announced as new sponsor of the League of Ireland on 26 February.[16][17] The prize fund for the season was set at €911,000.[18][19]

League of Ireland clubs in Europe 2010–11

UEFA Champions League

After retaining the league title in 2009, Bohemians represented the Republic of Ireland in the Champions League in 2010. They entered in the second qualifying round and played Welsh champions The New Saints. Bohs won 1–0 in the home leg at Dalymount Park, but they lost the away leg 4–0 resulting in the team exiting the tournament 4–1 on aggregate. Bohs manager Pat Fenlon later labelled the latter performance as 'disgraceful' and said 'the players let the club, league and country down'.[22] The result was labelled by others as the worst result in Bohs' 40-year European history.[23]

UEFA Europa League

Dundalk were the first Irish representative in European competition in 2010 as they entered in the first qualifying round. They were drawn to play Luxembourg side CS Grevenmacher. The Lilywhites secured a 3–3 draw in the first leg in Luxembourg. Dundalk qualified for the next stage by winning 2–1 at Oriel Park.[24]

Sporting Fingal and Shamrock Rovers entered in the second qualifying round of the competition and were drawn against Portuguese club C.S. Marítimo and Israeli club Bnei Yehuda respectively, while Dundalk's progression earned them a tie against Bulgarian side Levski Sofia. Fingal equalised with three minutes to go in the first leg in Madeira but went behind again in the 95th minute, losing 3–2. Rovers went behind to their Israeli opponents in Tallaght but grabbed an injury time equaliser. Dundalk lost by six goals to Sofia in Bulgaria. In the second leg, Rovers won 1–0 in Israel to progress 2–1 on aggregate. Dundalk were beaten for a second time by Levski Sofia, while[25] Sporting Fingal again lost 3–2 to Maritimo and were eliminated by 6–4.[26]

Shamrock Rovers' progression to the next round earned them a tie with Italian club Juventus. Rovers lost the first leg against Juventus 2-0 at home.[27]

UEFA Ranking

The League of Ireland is in 29th position out of 53 going into this season's European competitions. This is the highest position the league has been in since 1986.

After ten games so far, the league has picked up 1.000 co-efficient points, which is a significant increase on what it had received after the same amount of games last year.
