Tyler Patrick Kelly (born July 20, 1988) is an American professional baseball third baseman and second baseman for the New York Mets of Major League Baseball (MLB).

Career

Kelly attended St. Mary's High School in Stockton, California,[1] and the University of California, Davis.[2] The Baltimore Orioles selected Kelly in the 13th round of the 2009 amateur draft and began his professional career that year, hitting .265 with 33 walks in 61 games for the Short-Season A Aberdeen Ironbirds.[3] In 2010, he played with the Class-A Delmarva Shorebirds, he batted .259 with 4 home runs, 58 RBI, and 30 doubles.[3] Kelly played the 2011 season in Delmarva, batting .274 with 4 home runs and 46 RBI.[3]

In 2012 he hit .327 with 11 home runs and 70 RBI split between the Advanced-A Frederick Keys, Double-A Bowie BaySox, and Triple-A Norfolk Tides.[3] The next year, Kelly hit .283 in 72 games for Bowie before he was traded to the Seattle Mariners for Eric Thames,[4] after which he batted .320 with 51 walks in 54 games for the Triple-A Tacoma Rainiers. On the season, he recorded 85 runs, 27 doubles and 102 walks in 126 games, hitting .298.[3]

Kelly was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals for Sam Gaviglio on November 20, 2014.[5] As a member of the Cardinals organization, he played for the Triple-A Memphis Redbirds and batted .203 in 79 games played.[3] On July 22, 2015, Kelly was claimed off waivers by the Toronto Blue Jays,[6] and optioned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons. He was designated for assignment on August 29, and outrighted to the Bisons on August 31. Kelly played in 117 games in the 2015 season, and batted .226 with 3 home runs and 33 RBI.[3] He elected free agency on November 7.[7]

Kelly was named a Mid-Season All-Star in his respective leagues in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2013, and a MiLB.com Organization All-Star in 2012 and 2013.[8]

On November 13, 2015, Kelly signed a minor league contract with the New York Mets that included an invitation to spring training.[9] The Mets promoted Kelly to the major leagues on May 23, 2016 to replace an injured Lucas Duda.[10] Kelly made his major league debut starting at third base against the Washington Nationals on May 24.[2]
