The Archdiocese of Denver is the Catholic Archdiocese of the Latin Rite for the city of Denver, Colorado, and the Colorado counties of Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Jefferson, Larimer, Logan, and Weld. The archdiocese's home is at the Cathedral Basilica of the Immaculate Conception on the corner of Colfax Avenue and Logan Street.

On May 29, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI announced that Bishop Samuel Joseph Aquila of the Diocese of Fargo, North Dakota had been appointed to become fifth archbishop of Denver. Aquila was ceremonially installed as archbishop on July 18, 2012.

The Latin title of the archdiocese is Archidioecesis Denveriensis and the corporate title is Archdiocese of Denver. The Archdiocese covers an area of 40,154 square miles (104,000 km2). The archdiocese is part of the XIII Conference Region and includes 113 parishes, 307 priests, and an estimated 550,000 lay Catholics.

History

The area that now makes up the Denver Archdiocese was originally part of the Diocese of Santa Fe. In 1868, territory was taken from the then-Diocese of Santa Fe in New Mexico and the Diocese of Grass Valley in California to form the Vicariate Apostolic of Colorado and Utah. In 1870, the name was changed to the Vicariate Apostolic of Colorado, and the territory of Utah was transferred to the Archdiocese of San Francisco. The Diocese of Denver was officially created on August 16, 1887, and covered the entire state of Colorado.

On November 15, 1941, territory was taken from the Diocese of Denver to form the Diocese of Pueblo, Colorado and the Denver Diocese was elevated to an Archdiocese. On November 10, 1983, territory was taken from both the Archdiocese of Denver and the Diocese of Pueblo to form the Diocese of Colorado Springs.

On May 29, 2012, Bishop Samuel Joseph Aquila of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fargo was named as the new Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Denver.[1] Bishop James Conley was appointed to serve as the Archdiocese Apostolic Administrator until a new Archbishop was installed, and Aquila was installed in a ceremony on July 18 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.[2]
