Hello, and welcome to the Sherlock Holmes portal. Here, there is information about the world's greatest "consulting detective", created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Holmes is famous for his astute logical reasoning, his ability to adopt almost any disguise, and his use of forensic science skills to solve difficult cases. Holmes first appeared in publication in 1887, and was eventually featured in four novels and 56 short stories. The first novel, A Study in Scarlet, appeared in Beeton's Christmas Annual in 1887 and the second, The Sign of the Four, in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine in 1890. The character grew tremendously in popularity with the first series of short stories in The Strand Magazine, beginning with "A Scandal in Bohemia" in 1891; further series of short stories and two novels published in serial form appeared between then and 1927. The stories cover a period from around 1880 up to 1914. All but four stories are narrated by Holmes's friend and biographer, Dr. John H. Watson; two are narrated by Holmes himself ("The Blanched Soldier" and "The Lion's Mane") and two others are written in the third person ("The Mazarin Stone" and "His Last Bow"). In two stories ("The Musgrave Ritual" and "The Gloria Scott"), Holmes tells Watson the main story from his memories, while Watson becomes the narrator of the frame story. The first and fourth novels, A Study in Scarlet and The Valley of Fear, each include a long interval of omniscient narration recounting events unknown to either Holmes or Watson. |

Elementary is an American crime drama series that presents a contemporary update of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character Sherlock Holmes. The series was created by Robert Doherty and stars Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson. The first season premiered on CBS in September 2012 and season two began airing in October 2013. The series is set and filmed primarily in New York City.
The show follows Holmes, a recovering drug addict and former consultant to Scotland Yard, as he assists the New York City Police Department in solving various crimes. His indifference of police procedures often lead to conflict with Captain Thomas "Tommy" Gregson (Aidan Quinn) though the two have a mutual respect for one another. He is initially accompanied by Watson as his sober companion. She is a former surgeon and was hired by Holmes father to help him in his rehabilitation. However, they soon form a bond and she begins training as Holmes apprentice detective. Although the series portrays many crimes and culprits, it also features Holmes conflict with Moriarty and Irene Adler (Natalie Dormer). Other supporting roles include Jon Michael Hill as Detective First Grade Marcus Bell and Rhys Ifans as Mycroft Holmes, who wishes for Sherlock to return to England.
On 23 October 2012, CBS picked up Elementary for a full season. On 15 November 2012, the network ordered two additional episodes, bringing the total number of episodes to 24. On 27 March 2013, the series was renewed for its second season, which premiered on 26 September 2013 with an episode filmed on location in London.

Holmes is the main character of the stories, and is near always partnered with Dr. Watson, who narrates the vast majority of stories. Holmes is based in 221b Baker Street, in London; where he works as the world's only consulting detective. Holmes first appeared in 1887, debuting in Beeton's Christmas Annual with "A Study in Scarlet", which held the first of his 60 stories, 56 short stories and 4 novels. Holmes narrates only 2 stories, leaving the other 58 to be narrated by his friend Dr. Watson. His last appearance was in "The Adventure of Shoscombe Old Place", with Watson, Doyle had previously tried to stop writing the novels with "The Final Problem", but was forced to continue, making Holmes miraculously survive due to massive public outrage.

The 1916 Sherlock Holmes film, created by Essanay Studios, was an American silent film. William Gillette starred as Holmes and Edward Fielding as Watson, but the film was lost, all that remains are a few stills and the promotional posters.
