Paper pallets are shipping or display pallets made from paperboard.

Construction

Paper shipping pallets, also referred to as "ecopallets", come in corrugated fiberboard, partial wood decks or engineered with laminated paperboard. Some are made of paperboard composite honeycomb.

There are many different design configurations that exist within the paper pallet market that may use glue, staples and paper cores in their assembly, although designs have been engineered from just two flat corrugated boards.

Comparisons

Advantages of paper pallets include:

  • Lighter weight than wood or steel
  • Thinner than wood, more products shipped on a load
  • Disposable
  • Recyclable
  • Very flexible to adapt to special transport needs
  • Meet Integrated Pollution Prevention and Control (IPPC) requirements
  • Meet international regulations on trade (ISPM)
  • No fumigation
  • Environmental Friendly
  • Clean and dust free

Disadvantages of paper pallets include:

  • Susceptible to moisture
  • Lack stiffness compared to most other pallet materials

History

It is believed that the first American designer and manufacturer of paper pallets was Innovative Enterprises, Inc. then of St. Louis, Missouri.[citation needed] In 1992, Innovative Enterprises moved operations to Washington, Missouri.
