Mathurapur (Vidhan Sabha constituency) was an assembly constituency in South 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal.

Overview

As a consequence of the order of the Delimitation Commission, Mathurapur (Vidhan Sabha constituency) ceases to exist from 2011. Raidighi (Vidhan Sabha constituency) will cover most of Mathurapur community development block.[1]

Mathurapur (Vidhan Sabha constituency) was part of Mathurapur (Lok Sabha constituency) (SC).[1]

1977-2006

In the 2006[15]and 2001[14]state assembly elections Kanti Ganguly of CPI(M) won the 123 Mathurapur assembly seat defeating his nearest rival Satya Ranjan Bapuli of Trinamool Congress. Satya Ranjan Bapuli representing Congress had won the seat five times in a row defeating Kanti Ganguly of CPI(M) in 1996[13]and 1991,[12]Brindaban Bhandari of CPI(M) in 1987[11] and 1982,[10] and Robin Mondal of SUC in 1977.[9][16]

1951-1972

Birendra Nath Halder of Congress won in 1972.[8]Renupada Haldar of SUC won in 1971[7]and 1969.[6]H.Haldar of Bangla Congress won in 1967.[5]In 1962[4] Mathurapur had two seats. Bhusan Chandra Das of Congress won the Mathurapur South East seat. Brindaban Gayen of Congress won the Mathurapur North West (SC) seat. In 1957 and in independent India’s first election in 1951 Mathurapur was a joint seat. Bhusan Chandra Das and Brindaban Gayen, both of Congress won in 1957.[3]Bhusan Chandra Das of KMPP and Brindaban Gayen of Congress won in 1951.[2]
