Founded February 1972[1]
Formerly called
National Multiple Sclerosis Society of Australia

MS Australia is a national, not-for-profit organisation that delivers services to people with Multiple Sclerosis, also known as MS, the most common chronic neurological disease affecting young Australians, affecting three times more women than men.[2][3] MS Australia aims to enhance the quality of life of people with Multiple Sclerosis and reduce the impact MS has on the families and carers.[4]

MS Australia delivers service to people with MS via state based MS Societies.

Objectives

  • To help eliminate MS by funding research into the nature, causes, treatment, diagnosis and management of the disease.[5]
  • To apply results of worldwide research towards programs of treatment, prevention and cure.
  • To commission new research, facilitate national and international collaborations and fund established research initiatives through Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia, who work in partnership with Australia’s top medical research institutes.
  • To rationalise public education and awareness programs by producing publications and other materials.
  • To encourage cooperation in government relations, fundraising, project development, staff training, planning health economics, state office development assistance, recruitment and evaluation.
  • To take part in the worldwide fight against MS with the Multiple Sclerosis International Federation Societies
  • To develop common systems to reduce costs, compare data and share resources.
  • To develop the People with MS movement.
