Toshikazu Shiozawa (塩沢 敏一 Shiozawa Toshikazu?, January 28, 1954May 10, 2000), better known by the stage name Kaneto Shiozawa (塩沢 兼人 Shiozawa Kaneto?), was a Japanese voice actor from Tokyo. At the time of his death, he was attached to Aoni Production. He had a distinctive cold, calm, aristocratic-sounding voice, which often typecast him as villainous or anti-heroic strategists and intellectuals. His stage name originated from the Japanese director Kaneto Shindō.

Life and career

Shiozawa yearned to be a performer since his childhood. He graduated from Nihon University Second Senior High School, where he learned to perform in its art department. On May 9, 2000, at 4:00 pm, Shiozawa fell down the stairway of his home in Shinjuku, Tokyo. Despite saying that "I'm all right" (大丈夫だ Daijōbu da?), Shiozawa's condition changed at 10:00 pm that day. He fell unconscious and was rushed to the Tokyo Medical University Hospital; he died of a cerebral contusion at 12:54 am on May 10. He was 46 years old at the time of his death. Fellow voice actor Hidekatsu Shibata was one of the attendees at his funeral. Shiozawa's ongoing roles were replaced with other voice actors after his death.

Hikaru Midorikawa adored him. He said, "Kaneto Shiozawa was my hero."

Successors

After Shiozawa's death, the following voice actors replaced his ongoing roles:

In the Guilty Gear series, Shiozawa's character Zato-1 dies sometime between the events of Guilty Gear X and Guilty Gear XX. As a replacement, the video games now instead feature Zato-1's shadow-like forbidden beast Eddie, who uses the same body but has a different voice (played by Takehito Koyasu). Incidentally, in the Rival Schools series, Kaneto's character Hyo is the twin brother of Isshin's character Kyosuke, and Isshin replaced Kaneto as the voice Rei in the Fist of the North Star fighting game by Arc System Works. His character, Buriburizaemon in the Crayon Shin-chan series, was left voiceless and has never spoken.
