David Harte (born 3 April 1988) is an Irish professional field hockey player who plays as a goalkeeper for Kampong and Dabang Mumbai at club level and internationally for Ireland.

Career

Raised in Kinsale, Harte began playing field hockey at the age of thirteen at Bandon Grammar School.[1] He eventually started playing professionally with Dutch side Kampong[2] joining the side in 2010.[3] He played for the club in both the local Hoofdklasse and the Euro Hockey League. He helped the side reach the quarter-finals during the 2014–15 season but could not prevent Kampong from being eliminated by UHC Hamburg, 3–2.[4]

India

In 2013, Harte was put forward for selection in the Hockey India League auction.[5] and was drafted in by the Mumbai Magicians for $11,000.[5] As the league was only one month in duration, Harte could play in India and continue with his club side, Kampong. He made his debut for Mumbai Magicians on 29 January 2014 against the Uttar Pradesh Wizards. He started in goal but could not prevent Mumbai from losing 3–5.[6] The season ended with the Magicians failing to reach the finals, finishing fifth in the standings.[7]

The following season, Harte was bought at the Hockey India League auction by newly formed Dabang Mumbai (replacement for Mumbai Magicians) for $51,000.[8] This made Harte the second most expensive goalkeeper in the league, after India's Sreejesh Ravindran, and eighth most valuable player overall.[8] The season however would be even worse for Harte's side than the previous, finishing in dead last position this time.[9] Despite the rocky season, Harte was one of three players retained by Dabang Mumbai for the 2016 season.[9] In order to retain Harte, Mumbai paid $65,000, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in the league.[1]

International

Harte made his debut for Ireland in 2006.[10] At the 2014 Hockey Champions Challenge in Malaysia he won the "Goalkeeper of the Tournament" [10] and helped Ireland reach the third place match in that tournament, where they lost to Malaysia 4–2.[11]

Harte then won "Goalkeeper of the Tournament" again after the 2015 EuroHockey Nations Championship.[12] and helped Ireland reach third place in that tournament. He was also pivotal in helping Ireland qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for the first time in their history.[1] He won the FIH goalkeeper of the year award in 2015 becoming the first Irish player to win the award.

Personal

David Harte has a twin brother, Conor Harte, who also plays professional field hockey, but as an outfield player.[10] The two twins played with each other both internationally and club level with Dabang Mumbai.[10]
