Alain Sars (born 30 April 1961) is a retired French football referee.
Sars was involved in some controversy in the game between AIK and Barcelona, when he wrongfully allowed a goal for Barcelona. Barcelona had been awarded a corner. AIK had been allowed by the referee to substitute two players. While two players are leaving the pitch, and before replacements are on the pitch, Sars allows Barcelona to take the corner with 11 players against 9. Barcelona scores and Sars allows the goal.[1][2]
Sars has officiated matches in the 2000 African Cup of Nations,[3] UEFA Champions League,[4] the UEFA European Football Championship, and the 1995 FIFA World Youth Championship.[5] He also served as a referee in qualifying matches for the Euro 1996,[6] 1998 World Cup,[7] Euro 2000,[8] 2002 World Cup,[9] Euro 2004,[10] and 2006 World Cup[11] tournaments.
Sars was named by FIFA in March 2006 as one of the 44 candidate referees to officiate at the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany,[12] but he was not among those selected for the tournament. He retired internationally in 2006.
