National Highway 209 is a National Highway in Southern India. It starts from Dewan Madhao Rao road in Basavanagudi, Bengaluru in Karnataka and ends at NH 7 at Dindigul in Tamil Nadu. The road crosses Kaveri river between Malavalli and Sattegal and it crosses from Punjanoor in Karnataka into Hasanur in Tamil Nadu. The road is called Sathyamangalam road between Coimbatore and Sathyamangalam of Erode District and Kanakapura road between Bangalore and Kanakapura of Ramanagara district. This is the most important road passing through the Coimbatore city and its suburbs. The length of the road is about 44 km within its city limits including suburbs. It is the best way to reach Bangalore from Coimbatore about 350 km,instead of going via Salem due to heavy traffic between Salem-Coimbatore NH47. There is a proposal to convert the Dindigal - Annur(Coimbatore) as an expressway in this route due to the volume of vehicular and truck traffic. This route passing through ghat section from Sathyamangalam to Hasanur in Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu Route

Hasanur, Bannari, Sathyamangalam, Puliyampatti, Annur(suburb of Coimbatore), Coimbatore, Pollachi, Udumalaipettai, Madathukulam, Palani and Dindigul.

There is a proposal for extending this highway as NH 209-A, which splits from Sathy towards Erode via Gobi and reaches Dindigul via Sivagiri, Aravakkurichi.

Karnataka Side Route

Bengaluru, Kaggalipura, Harohalli, Kanakapura, Halaguru, Malavalli, Sattegala, Kollegal, Yelandur, Chamrajanagar and Punjanuru.

Kinathukadavu - Echanari (Coimbatore bypass towards Madukarai on NH 47) - Sundrapuram - Attuppalam toll gate - Karumbukadai - Ukkadam - Oppanakara street - Town Hall - Gandhipuram (Dr.Nanjappa Road) - Ganapathy - Sivanandapuram - Saravanampatti - Sarcarsamakulam - Kovilpalayam - Ganesapuram - Kariyampalayam - Annur.

History

Tippu Sultan, the associated King of Mysore Kingdom used to travel along this route. When he thought of kingdom extending plan to Coimbatore, he took Mysore-Nanjangud-Chamarajanagar-Sathy- Coimbatore route to reach his New areas in TN. At that time the mode of Transportation was Bull or Horse carts.

Road Widening

Four lane road proposed from Dindigul to Coimbatore, considering the traffic and growth on the Dindigul-Coimbatore-Annur road. The road passes through the Coimbatore city and it is popularly known as Sathy Road i.e.Sathyamangalam road. Within the city stretch, the proposed flyover (under construction-to be completed by March/April 2016)at Gandhipuram would decongest the traffic and ease the flow of vehicles on Sathy Road. Due to heavy volume of traffic between Saravanampatty and Annur the authorities proposed to have this stretch into a four-lane one. The other section covered 42 km from Annur to Sathyamangalam which will be Converted into two-lane including the Dhimbam Ghat Section (with 27 hairpin bends. Dhimbam peak at a height of 1105 M)
