Johnny Cristián Herrera Muñoz (Spanish pronunciation: [ˈʝoni eˈreɾa], born 9 May 1981) is a Chilean footballer who plays for Universidad de Chile as goalkeeper.

Club career

Born in Angol, Herrera joined Universidad de Chile youth set-up and was promoted to the first-adult team in 1999. After being back-up of Sergio Vargas two seasons, in 2002 he became the first-choice keeper of the team. Two years later, he was a key player in the 2004 Torneo Apertura obtention after scoring the penalty shootout winning goal against Cobreloa at Calama which gave the team its twelfth league title.[2]

In 2006 he joined Brazilian powerhouse Corinthians.[3]

After an unsuccessful spell at Brazil he signed for Everton de Viña del Mar where after a poor 2007 season, he again as a key player reached a league title, being now the 2008 Torneo Apertura.[4] Then he left the club after differences with coach Nelson Acosta[5] and signed for Audax Italiano.[6]

In 2011, Herrera returned Universidad de Chile completing a brilliant season where won both year tournaments (Apertura and Clausura) and reached the Copa Sudamericana which the club’s first international title.[7] Highlighting he was chosen Conmebol Goalkeeper of The Year.[8] In 2012 he won the Torneo Apertura, his seventh title with the club,[9] reaching one year later the 2012–13 Copa Chile.

On 18 March 2014 Herrera scored his first ever continental goal during a 2014 Copa Libertadores group stage match against Peruvian side Real Garcilaso, which was the game’s only one goal, scored through a penalty kick.[10]

He helped to won the club the 2014 Torneo Apertura title with Martín Lasarte on the bench.[11]

For the 2015 Torneo Apertura he scored his first league goal after reaching a penalty score in a 2–2 draw with Universidad Católica for the University Derby.[12] On 2 December, for the Copa Chile final after a 1–1 draw with Colo-Colo during the 90 minutes, Herrera was a key player in the shootout and gave the club its fifth title in the competition after scoring the winning penalty as well as having save a shoot to Martín Rodríguez during it.[13]

International career

Herrera has represented Chilean national team since he was young, participating in its U-20 and U-23 levels, this last as one of the 23 players nominated to the 2000 Summer Olympics at Sydney. His first call-up to adult team was in 2002 in a game with Mexico, but however his last was in 2005. Years later, during the best moment of his career between 2011 and 2012 playing for Universidad de Chile, Herrera curiously didn't receive nominations from Claudio Borghi, incumbent coach. The press usually alluded to an internal displeasure between both, but with Borghi departure in December 2012 the situation would seems change on benefit to Herrera.

After almost 7 years absence[14] Herrera was reconsidered by Jorge Sampaoli, who finally assumed. He received his first call up from Sampaoli for the friendly matches against Haiti and Senegal in January 2013,[15] where stated (Sampaoli) that Herrera would play against Haiti, rotating thereby the goal with Christopher Toselli.[16] Nevertheless he played both games which were 2–1[17] and a 3–0 wins respectively.[18]

On 5 March 2014, Herrera earned his eight cap against Germany in Stuttgart after replacing first-choice Claudio Bravo for injury.[19] However he committed a well performance during the game played at Mercedes-Benz Arena which Chile lost 1–0 with Mario Götze score.[20]

Having been part of all qualification campaign since Sampaoli‘s taking, Herrera was named in Chile's list of 23 for the FIFA World Cup in Brazil. On 5 June, he played in a 2–0 friendly win over Northern Ireland, prior the World Cup.[21]

He was part of 2015 Copa América champion team as back-up of Claudio Bravo.
