Summary

Engraving from "Smith's Illustrated Astronomy" from 1848 of the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cincinnati_Observatory" class="extiw" title="en:Cincinnati Observatory">Cincinnati Observatorys</a> 11 inch "Merz and Mahler" <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/refracting_telescope" class="extiw" title="en:refracting telescope">refracting telescope</a> installed in 1843. It is described in the 1848 text as "The 2nd Telescope in size in the United States at the Cincinnati Observatory." It is believed to be the oldest professional telescope still in use in the Western Hemisphere<a href="#cite_note-1">[1]</a>.
