Paris, 1687. The front page had the introductory article, <i>Philosophorum Sinensium Principis Confucii Vita</i> (The Life of Confucius, the Prince of Chinese Philiosophers). According to D.E. Mungello (<i>Curious Land</i>, 1989), this work represents the result of collective efforts of several generations of Jesuits - starting with Ruggieri and Ricci - who had used the Four Books in their study, and continuously improved the translation and commentary. |
