KERA (90.1 FM) is a National Public Radio affiliate station for North Texas. Based in Dallas, the station's main transmitter is located in Cedar Hill, Texas with translators that serve Tyler (K261CW, 100.1 FM), the Sherman/Denison area (K257EV, 99.3 FM), and Wichita Falls (K202DR, 88.3 FM). It was also rebroadcast on the Public, educational, and government access (PEG) cable tv channel, Irving Community Television Network during its off-air times prior to 2009.
The station was established on July 11, 1974. The station's call letters, which are said to represent a "new era in broadcasting," are shared with Dallas public television station KERA-TV channel 13; both are owned by North Texas Public Broadcasting Inc., a non-profit corporation registered in the state of Texas. While there is cross-promotion between stations, each operates its own pledge drives.
Programming format
KERA 90.1 produces topic driven local radio news programs, spot news and music programs mixed with national news, talk shows and radio magazine programs from sources that include National Public Radio (NPR), Public Radio International (PRI), American Public Media (APM) and the BBC World Service. It also rebroadcasts PBS NewsHour in audio format.
Local programs include Think, hosted by Krys Boyd, and CEO, hosted by Lee Cullum. Jeff Whittington hosts the call in radio talk show Anything You Ever Wanted to Know. Think and CEO also each have television versions, seen on KERA-TV.
The station used to air the locally produced music program 90.1 at Night hosted by Paul Slavens, which aired Sunday nights from 8:00 p.m. until 10:00 p.m. The program was moved to their newly acquired sister station KKXT and was renamed The Paul Slavens Show.
Since 2012, KERA has enjoyed a news partnership with NBC-owned television station KXAS-Channel 5 in Fort Worth. This is a part of a larger partnership effort between all of the NBC O&Os and nonprofit news organizations in their communities, a byproduct of the Comcast-NBCUniversal merger which took place in 2011.
Funding
Like other noncommercial stations in the United States, KERA broadcasts on-air pledge drives to raise money to pay for programming. The majority of KERA's funding comes from membership pledge drives. Additional funding is accrued through corporate sponsorship and underwriting announcements. Ten percent of the station's funding is government supported, through the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.
