Summary

Description

The first page of the first Russian book printed in the "civil script" (гражданский шрифт /graZdansk'ij Sr'ift/) introduced by decree of Peter the Great in 1708.

The book is the Geometry (Геометрия /g'eom'etr'ija/), published in Moscow, March 17, 1708.

The language tries to steer away from Church Slavonic, but is very different from the literary forms that will have evolved by 1800.

Note that the modern Russian letters и, з are not used, and are replaced by i (without dot) and s. Abolished in the initial decree, the two modern letters would be tacitly reinstated within the decade. The letter s soon fell out of use in secular writing, but i lingered until put to rest in 1918.
